The receptionist was on the phone when I arrived there (fair enough) but didn't even acknowledge me or say "one second" or anything...bad start. I was on the 3rd level of a bunk bed and was conscious that my every move was felt on the two beds below. The water went for about an hour on the first night I stayed and there was no water for 5 hours on the second night!! This meant that not only could we not shower or wash our dishes in the kitchen, but the toilets very quickly became quite disgusting. The wifi is pretty terrible as well...cuts out a lot and isn't reliable when it is working. When I checked out I asked to leave my bags before I left the city...They told me to leave them just on the floor in the lounge which didn't feel too safe as there isn't always someone on reception. The showers don't lock and don't have anywhere for you to put your clothes while you shower. Breakfast wasn't included for my room and it was 12 reales if I wanted to buy it!! No water filter in the kitchen, so had to buy bottled water. The windows in the bedroom I was in don't close and so mosquitos get in and I got eaten alive... Really not very good. I spotted a guitar in the corner of the room and my heart jumped, only to see it was missing 3 strings... I wouldn't recommend it at all.

The only plus is the location. Staff is not friendly. Bad showers and toilets. If you are a dinosaur you might get some sleep in those beds, otherwise, good luck. (Even the cat is not friendly)

I've stayed at Vila Carioca a couple of times, in private and collective rooms; and can confidently say that it is my favorite hostel in Rio. Its location is great - it manages to be on nice, cozy and silent place, but it's still very close to public transport, restaurants and beaches. But what really sets this hostel apart is how great the service is - the crew speaks good English, and are very kind and helpful. You'll feel right at home. It's also cheap, very cheap. Can't really ask for more.

Stayed at Vila Carioca during the Olympics. Overall gets a "very good" reading from me. Location is excellent: just blocks from the metro in a very secure neighborhood. Close to grocery, restaurant/bars as well. Breakfast was a highlight. Plenty of bread, fresh fruit, homemade coffee cake, cheese and ham. They have kitchen space and a fridge. I do think their policy to not allow outside beverages is a little silly, mostly because their selection isn't great. Although I did see some of my fellow guests enjoying a pitcher of caparinha mixed by the hostel which was enormous and cheap. Staff were helpful, but fairly reserved. Tended to interact with each other until you had a question to ask. They were able to give me basic information when I needed it. The cleaning and breakfast staff were actually some of the loudest people there. It didn't really bother me, since they do have the designated quiet time. Actual bunks were adequate. The usual bunks with minimum comfort. Mine was out in the center of the room so I didn't have access to an electrical outlet overnight (although most did). Luckily common room has plenty. I got some skin irritation, but I think it is hives, not bugs (seems to happen every time I travel these days). The noise caused by other guests coming and going in the middle of the night varied by day. Price: hard for me to judge as I was there during Olympics and price was high for the event. It seemed like it was in line with what other hostels were charging for the same time. For me, the breakfast spread and the closeness of the metro made it worth it.

Staying here during the World Cup was a great experience. The location is fantastic, situated two blocks from a metro station that takes you to, or at least close to, most any place you'd be interested in going. The accommodations were what you'd expect from a hostel: bunk beds, lockers, a shared bathroom, large recreational area. They also had a nice outdoor patio where breakfast was provided every morning. The hostel attendants, Alicia, Kaio and Sofi, were very helpful in getting us situated and even showing us around town. Security was never a concern here, either. They have inexpensive locks you can purchase (or bring your own) to secure the provided lockers. There's also an overnight attendant who tends the automatically locking gate to let you in late at night, and ostensibly to not let in unwanted visitors. That being said, the area this hostel is in is a well-lit, well-frequented part of town where this shouldn't even be much of a concern. Overall, I'd definitely recommend this hostel for anyone considering a trip to Rio.
